The Importance of Biotin For Healthy Hair Growth

Hair is a protein fiber filament that grows mainly in the epidermis, or outermost layer of the skin. The human body, aside from very few parts of very sensitive glabrous tissue, is composed almost entirely of proteins that produce a fine, thin hair and bulbous terminal hair. Hair is an especially significant biomaterial, primarily composed of keratin, the same basic building material in nails and skin that forms the basis of most epidermal tissues. In animals, keratin is present in all body systems except the gastrointestinal tract and some parts of the immune system. In humans, keratin is produced in a person's skin as the result of intense stimulation by ultraviolet light from the sun. After exposure to ultraviolet light, the keratin inside the skin thickens and becomes what we know as hair.

Human hair fiber is made of three basic protein components - keratin, biotin, and collagen. Keratin is the primary structural protein of hair. As keratin grows, it pushes outward, tangling up with dirt and debris and delivering oxygen to hair roots. Keratin is composed mostly of amino acids. There is not enough keratin protein in hair for it to be healthy, strong, and glossy.

When keratin is insufficient or damaged somehow, it stops growing new hair or stops tangling up before it can deliver oxygen to the hair roots. As hair grows, microscopic holes called follicle pores form near the base of the hair shaft, allowing accumulated keratin particles to be released, carrying debris off the hair shaft, and transporting nutrients to the hair strands. These hair shaft pores become clogged with debris as the hair grows. Eventually, the clogged pores become ruptured, exposing hair shaft, which starts to break. This process of hair shedding is what we call hair loss.

There are a variety of reasons why people start to lose their hair, but a common reason is a deficiency of biotin and keratin proteins in their body. In other words, many people begin to experience hair loss when they lack the essential hair-growing proteins. Biotin is a component of hair, and is the primary component that help hair shaft grow properly.

It is believed that biotin supplies essential amino acids needed by the hair to grow properly. Many hair problems, such as hair loss, are associated with a lack of biotin in the body. Biotin is naturally produced by the liver and hair follicles and is critical to hair health.
